CRM with AI agents in 2026, what the AI actually does
Every CRM now advertises AI. The useful distinction is between AI that writes, AI that recommends and AI that acts on records, and each comes with its own costs and controls.

Sales teams expect a great deal from AI agents, and the survey numbers show why. The harder question for a buyer is which kind of AI a CRM actually provides, what it is allowed to do on its own and how it is billed.
The time problem agents are meant to solve
In Salesforce's 2026 State of Sales survey of 4,050 sales professionals in 22 countries, the average seller spent 40% of their time selling. Fifty-four per cent said they had already used AI agents and nearly nine in ten planned to by 2027. Sellers expected agents to cut prospect research time by 34% and email drafting by 36% once fully implemented; these are expectations, not measured results1. The same survey found that 51% of sales leaders using AI said disconnected systems were slowing them down, and 74% of sales professionals were focusing on data cleansing1.
The pattern is consistent with MIT's 2025 study of enterprise AI, in which most generative AI pilots showed little measurable effect on profit and loss, and tools bought from specialised vendors succeeded about 67% of the time, roughly three times the rate of internal builds2.
Three kinds of AI in a CRM
- AI that writes. Drafts, rewrites and summaries of emails and calls. Pipedrive's email generator and summariser3 and Copilot's email drafts in Dynamics 365 Sales4 are examples.
- AI that recommends. Scores, predictions and next-best actions that a person acts on. Pipedrive's win probabilities3, Freddy AI's intent scores in Freshsales5 and Zia's churn and win predictions in Zoho CRM6 belong here.
- AI that acts. Agents that research, qualify, log or follow up on records. Attio's web research and custom agents7, Microsoft's Sales Qualification Agent4, HubSpot's Prospecting Agent8, Close's voice agent9 and OpenLazarus's AI teammates10 are in this group.
Most products now offer some of each. The difference that matters in practice is how much of the third kind is included, and under what controls.
How the products charge for AI
| Product | How AI is billed, as published |
|---|---|
| HubSpot | Monthly credits by tier (500, 3,000 or 5,000), no rollover; extra at $10 per 1,00011 |
| Attio | Seat credits per user and workspace credits per account, with paid top-ups12 |
| Close | 500 to 2,000 AI credits per user a month by plan; credits do not roll over13 |
| Freshsales | Freddy AI Agent at $49 per 100 sessions after a one-time 50014 |
| Salesforce | Agentforce for Sales add-on from $125 a user a month15 |
| Dynamics 365 Sales | 1,000 Copilot Credits per user a month on Premium; further agent use billed in Copilot Credits16 |
| OpenLazarus | AI credits for any model through its router, with a 5.5% fee17 |
Credit models make the monthly bill depend on usage. A buyer should ask each vendor what one typical task, such as qualifying one inbound lead, consumes.
Questions to ask about any CRM agent
- What can it do without a person's approval, and where is that limit set?
- Where is each action recorded, and who can read the log?
- Which records and inboxes can it see?
- What does one typical task cost in credits or sessions?
- What happens when it is unsure?
Controls that make agents usable
Agents that send email or change records need limits. OpenLazarus describes setting, per teammate, what it handles alone and what it asks a person first, deciding which teammates can see what, and logging every action where staff can read it18. Its sales agent page shows the agent sending routine follow-ups and saving a draft for review on a high-value contact19. Close marks several agent features as beta9. Whatever the product, the controls should be written down before the agent is switched on.
A rollout that works
- Pick one job. Inbound lead qualification, stale-deal follow-up or renewal preparation. One job, one owner.
- Clean the records it will touch. Agents amplify whatever data they are given.
- Set the limits in writing. What it may send, change or book alone, and what needs approval.
- Measure one number for four weeks. Response time to new leads, first meetings booked or deals closed out with a reason.
- Expand only what moved the number, and review the action log weekly in the first month.
The end state is modest and concrete: one agent doing one job, measured the same way every week, with a log anyone on the team can read. For how the products rank overall, see our main guide.
Questions buyers ask
What is an AI agent in a CRM?
An AI agent is software that carries out a task on CRM records with some autonomy, such as researching a lead, qualifying it, logging an interaction or sending a follow-up, rather than only suggesting text for a person to send. Vendors use the word loosely, so check what the agent is allowed to do without approval.
Which CRM has the best AI agents?
In our review, Attio and Dynamics 365 Sales include agents that research and qualify leads, Close has a voice agent with broader agents in beta, and OpenLazarus runs AI teammates with their own inbox and phone number on its CRM records. Pipedrive and Freshsales focus on recommendations and writing help.
How much do AI features in a CRM cost?
Most vendors meter AI separately. HubSpot uses monthly credits, Attio has seat and workspace credits, Close includes 500 to 2,000 AI credits a user, Freshsales sells AI agent sessions at $49 per 100, Salesforce sells Agentforce for Sales from $125 a user a month and OpenLazarus charges a 5.5% fee on AI credits.
